授業概要・方法等
This course provides students with opportunities to improve their communication skills in medical English.
The course includes 30 lecture classes in total (15 class lectures in each semester), which represents around one-hour lecture class per week. Classes include an introductory lecture of 30 minutes (given by the instructor) and 30 minutes for presentations (presentations can be either individuals or group presentation) followed by class discussions.
Each lecture is supported by a PowerPoint presentation, which includes the Japanese translation to each new medical term introduced to facilitate comprehension. In addition, all students get access to a PDF copy of the content presented in lectures, which is regularly provided the day before the lecture.
The Medical English program for students in the second year includes classes oriented to learn medical English terminology and to comprehend problems related to anatomy, physiology, immunology, microbiology, and biochemistry, which are the main subjects studied in their main courses that are taught in Japanese.
Regarding presentations: The topic of presentations is chosen by the instructor and are directly related to the subject of the lecture and may include short essays, description of a disease or a new discovery that can change medical practice.
In some classes, students’ presentations are short (15 minutes) and are followed by a reading and comprehension exercise, in which students are given a short essay, related to the topic discussed in the class, and thereafter they have to answer a quiz.
